Caritas Mombasa is the development arm of the Catholic Archdiocese of Mombasa and the official tool of the Archdiocese in the promotion and coordination of charitable contributions.
Through the 62 parishes spread across Kwale, Kilifi, Mombasa, and Taita-Taveta It cooperates with the poorest and vulnerable populations in the urban and semi-urban, rural, and marginalized areas.
Its main challenges remain rampant poverty, frequent disaster occurrences and climate change effects, lack of critical resources (water and food shortage), increasing inequalities, and the HIV/AIDS Pandemic.
Running Programs
· Humanitarian Programs: Caritas Mombasa organizes emergency activities and integrates a long-term perspective for disaster prevention program establishes and maintains an efficient and coordinated system for managing natural or man-made disasters.
· Livelihood Program: Develops poverty reduction strategies to empower communities and individuals towards self-sustenance in all areas. The program deals with food security, microfinance, and environmental conservation as key areas of intervention. It also oversees the implementation of water sanitation and hygiene (WASH) activities, in order to promote sanitation and hygiene practices that will ensure the optimal development and use of water and water facilities.
· Women and Gender program. The program promotes empowerment in men and women and facilitates equal participation and, opportunity, especially among the poor and vulnerable men and women in Kenya.
· Youth Empowerment: The program is designed to ensure that youth (young female and Male) have the necessary technical skills to help in job seeking and opportunities for advantage taking. It also avails practical life skills
Other cross-cutting programs focus on ‘Capacity Building’ and ‘Research, Information and Advocacy’, for strengthening leadership and conducting research for guiding development initiatives, respectively.
Caritas Mombasa works with other members of the Caritas Network and Caritas Internationalis, County and National government ministries, and also with other national and international non-governmental organizations within and outside the country.
