About Stellamaris
The Apostleship of the Sea is an agency of the Catholic Church. It is also sometimes known as Stella Maris (Star of the Sea), and its patron is the Virgin Mary as Our Lady, Star of the Sea. Founded in Glasgow, Scotland in the early 20th century, it provides pastoral care to seafarers through chaplaincies in ports in all continents of the world.
AoS offers practical and pastoral care to all seafarers and fishers, regardless of nationality, belief or race. The Apostleship of the Sea in Great Britain is part of an international network known to the maritime world as Stella Maris, working in more than 311 ports served by 216 port chaplains in more than 30 countries around the world.
Stella-Maris Mombasa ( In the Catholic Archdiocese of Mombasa) Kenya happens to be part of the Stella- Maris Network located within the Indian Ocean and operates majorly around Kwale, Kilifi, Mombasa, and Lamu although coordinating the hinterland fishing ports and banks within Nakuru, Homa Bay, Garissa, Bungoma, Malindi and Kisumu dioceses.
Programs
- Ship Visits Programs: This program entails planned and impromptu vessel visits; fishing or cargo, freight, cruise, and tanker ships. Seafarers’ and fishers’ general welfare is checked into and if any help is required then Stella-Maris officials avail it within the commissions Capacity.
- Training: Training of fishers in new fishing methods, entrepreneurship, and saving and life skills. Awareness creation on the current legal requirements on either fishing or shipping.
