About this Commission
The health commission began as a CBHC/AIDS relief project in 1996. It was an exclusively community-based home care programme providing initial medical care to HIV/AIDS patients and other sick and poor people in society. Volunteers and community health workers from the parishes formed the backbone of the programme leading nurses to the homes of their sick neighbours. This gradually spread from one parish to the other
The Archdiocese of Mombasa has been serving many poor people for over the last years through health care services, nutrition programmes, care of the orphans and vulnerable children, offering shelter to the less fortunate, rehabilitation of street children, and other many spiritual and charitable activities.
The Archdiocese has a CBHC and HIV/AIDS relief project which is a non-profit making programme whose aim is to offer community-based comprehensive and free services to people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA), to provide free basic health care services to the people of Mombasa.
There are 24 health facilities in the Archdiocese of Mombasa.2 Hospitals, 2 Health centers and twenty Dispensaries. The health commission has a medical coordinator who coordinates the activities of the Health facilities in collaboration with the county government and other stakeholders to ensure quality health care in the facilities and health-related programmes. These facilities are situated across four counties in the coastal region. Kwale county, Kilifi county, Taita taveta county, and Mombasa county.
The Archdiocese has a medical team comprised of Health care workers with diverse medical professionals. The team meets on monthly basis to organize and plan for health activities within the 4 counties. These activities include free medical camps, first aid services.
